About Me

Hello,

I’m Elaine, an artist, photographer and graphic designer.  I love capturing the beauty that is all around us either with a paint brush, camera lens or as a digital creation.

Creating art is a way of portraying how I see the world.  I draw inspiration from sources as varied as a graffiti filled busy city street to an isolated hiking trail through a quiet forest.  Each piece I create relates to my emotions and experiences, and I hope they connect to you as well.

I am an experimental artist which means I use my art to search and try ideas.  My current focus is abstract painting.  I love experimenting with different mediums, brushes, mark makers, and surfaces.

One reason I work as an experimental artist is that I have aphantasia.  Aphantasia affects only 1 to 3% of the world’s population.  It is defined as the inability to form mental imagery, which basically means I can’t visualize anything in my head.  It is just a different way of cognitive processing.  If you ask me to close my eyes and picture myself on a lovely beach, I know what it looks like, but I can’t picture the scene in my mind’s eye.

I start painting with a feeling, and an idea of what materials and colors I will use.  Then I experiment without a ‘pictured’ outcome in mind. I am always surprised at the end of the journey as the canvas takes on many, many layers and becomes something I could never have imagined.   I think that this is why one of my favorite things to do is to photograph a painting and then “take it apart” digitally and put it back together in a new way.

When I’m not in my studio I am exploring art galleries and museums, cooking a new dish, hiking trails, or enjoying a good book.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me and my work.  I hope my art brings you as much joy and inspiration as it does me.

Thank you for supporting a small business.  I couldn't do this without all of you!
